JUNE 6, 2017 PROGRAM:
 Combating the Opioid Epidemic

Attorney General Lori Swanson will provide the St. Paul Rotary with an update on the work of her office and discuss the ongoing effort to combat the opioid epidemic.

Lori Swanson was elected Attorney General of the State of Minnesota in 2006, and re-elected in 2010 and 2014. She is Minnesota’s 29th Attorney General and its first female Attorney General. AG Swanson is one of only seven women in the country holding this office.

Attorney General Swanson has been an advocate for Minnesota citizens in areas like consumer protection, criminal justice, charities compliance, health care, public safety, and senior citizens protection.

Lawyers USA named Attorney General Swanson one of the top ten attorneys in America in 2009. In 2012, the national publication "Health Leaders" magazine named Lori as one of 20 Americans who are making a difference in healthcare. The National Consumer Law Center gave Lori the Robert Drinan “Champion of Justice” award for her consumer protection work.

IN MEMORIUM: Dennis W. Boom

Dennis Wayne Boom was born in Marion, ND and grew up in Valley City, ND.  He came to Saint Paul to attend Hamline University.  After two years he transferred to the U of MN where he received his degree in Mortuary Science in 1962.  He spent his entire working career at the Holcomb-Henry-Boom-Purcell Funeral Home.  He purchased the funeral home business in 1981 from Earl and Roswitha Holcomb.  Dennis and Elaine expanded the business to a second location in Shoreview in 1993.

Dennis was an extremely generous person.  He was an active philanthropist who gave of his heart and time to his community.  Dennis was Prime Minister of the 1996 Saint Paul Winter Carnival, and was a member and served in leadership roles in Midway Lions Club, Tusler-Summit Masonic Lodge #263, Saint Paul Osman Shrine, Honolulu Aloha Ct #1 ROJ and Waikiki Yacht Club.  He sang in church choirs for over 50 years beginning in Valley City, ND, Hamline United Methodist Church and St. Andrews Cathedral in Honolulu, HI.

Dennis joined Saint Paul Rotary in 1989 and was very active. He had a love of music and was a regular piano player for our Rotary meetings. He played by ear.  Dennis also generously donated his penthouse condo in Hawaii for our annual silent auction to raise funds for the Saint Paul Rotary Foundation.  Dennis was an enthusiastic bridge player.

His true love was international travel and he and his late wife Elaine, traveled the world together, visiting all seven continents.

Dennis was preceded in death by his beloved wife Elaine in 2015 and his parents, Aaron and Marie Boom.  He is survived by his loving daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth and Sean Furrh and his special grandchildren, Annabelle, Sofia and Ian Furrh; cousins and many Rotary friends.

We request that this memorial resolution be read into the minutes of the Rotary Club of Saint Paul and that a copy be sent to his family members.

Respectfully submitted,

Blake Davis, Past President

Volunteer for Rotary Meeting Teams

Hello Club 10 Rotarians,

We need your help! Every week we have 7 volunteer positions at each of our meetings to keep our meetings lively, engaging and running smoothly.

  • 2 greeters
  • An Introducer of Guests/Happy dollars person
  • Someone to give our Inspirational Minute/Invocation
  • A scribe
  • Song Leader
  • Musician

We are working now to fill each of these positions for every week through the end of the year.  This is a great way to get involved and meet people.

So, if you have not used Signup.com before and you are ready to sign up for a volunteer role, simply click on the link below. You do not need a password or username, you just need your email address to sign up. Click the orange “Sign up!” button for whatever works in your schedule and that is it.
