Embracing Humanity: Ordinary People doing Extraordinary Things.

Jorene Mortenson will be the featured lunch speaker on Friday. Jorene is a former principal at Westside elementary School in River Falls. While living in Africa with her family, Jorene started a school in International school in Moshi, Tanzania – still a working school. After coming to River Falls, Jorene invited her son, Greg Mortenson, to speak to the children in her school. “I had been having a hard time explaining to adults why I wanted to help students in Pakistan. But the kids got it right away. When they saw the picture, they couldn’t believe that there was a place where children sat outside in cold weather and tried to hold classes without teachers.” Jorene’s students started collecting pennies – eventually filling two trash cans with 62, 345 pennies – and Pennies for Pakistan – now called Pennies for Peace - was started.
