Rotary District 5960 Governor Gary Campbell brought a message from Rotary International president Ron Burton to “Engage Rotary, Change Lives.”

In the absence of President Jim Kosmo, Vice President John Guthmann called the meeting to order.  David Laird led the singing of America the Beautiful with Past President Doug Hartford on the piano.  Past DG Ken Crabb gave the invocation and Past President Carolyn Brusseau facilitated the introductions of visiting Rotarians and guests – including 3 potential members.

VP John asked members to keep Ron Phillippo in their thoughts as he continues his battle with cancer.  Ron informed the office that after a series of tests and scans at Mayo, combined with his current treatment at home in the Lakeview/Stillwater Medical Group Cancer Infusion Center, his Mayo doctor concluded there is "hope" although the scans have shown the cancer continues to progress.  Ron has been a long time member with many friends in Rotary.  I’m sure he’d enjoy hearing from you.

Remember to “Like” Saint Paul Rotary on Face Book.  Think membership!!  Be sure to be thinking of people who would make good Rotarians and invite them to a meeting.

Past President Jay Pfaender announced the list of upcoming speakers – all of whom have been “in the news.”

Now that the labels have been put on the dictionaries, the next step is to deliver them to the 3rd grade students.  Blake Davis recruited volunteers to help with those deliveries.  If you’re able to help out please contact him or the Rotary office.

Sarah Kolar invited everyone to join her for the next “Rotary After Hours” event on October 23rd.  It will be held at Landmark Jewelers from 5:00-7:00 p.m.

Armando Camacho encouraged attendance at the Club 10/Rotaract annual networking event at Summit Brewing Company on October 29th.  Rotaract is a club of 18-30 year old young people.

Nancy Anderson circled the room collecting “Happy Dollar” donations from those wishing to share happy news with their fellow members.  These donations go to the Saint Paul Rotary Foundation.

Former Club 10 member, past president and current Assistant District Governor Alan Ruvelson introduced today’s speaker, Gary Campbell, District Governor for 5960.  Gary has been a member of the Anoka Rotary Club for 10 years and has served as secretary, president and both vocational and club chairs.

ImageSaint Paul Rotary has had 12 District Governors going back to Ed Flynn in 1924-25.  Past Minnesota Governor Elmer L. Andersen served as District Governor in 1954-55 and Past RI Director Jerry Meigs was District Governor in 1993-94.  Two other PDGs -- Ken Crabb (2004-05) and Joe Kovarik (2012-13) -- were at the meeting today to support Gary.

As DG Gary travels around visiting all 66 clubs in Rotary District 5960 he noticed three things all clubs have in common.  They are 1) Rotarians know how to have fun.  2) Each club has its own identity/personality.  They’re like fingerprints – everyone is different.  3)  When members join they understand that Rotary is not a spectator sport.  Rotarians see a need in the community and get things done.

He uses three words to describe clubs - perception, passion and innovation.  On the Rotary International level Rotarians are particularly proud of their involvement with polio eradication.  He cautioned that although we’ve made great progress, the mission is not complete.

Gary encouraged members to check out Rotary International’s new website (www.rotary.org) and… “Engage Rotary, Change Lives.”
