ImageGage Colby was a native Saint Paulite, born in Saint Paul and raised on Iglehart Street in the “Pill Hill” neighborhood.  He attended St. Mark’s grade school, Mariah Sanford Junior High and was a graduate of Saint Paul’s Central High School.  Gage worked at Hove’s grocery, loved going to the Grandview movie theatre, sledding on the hills at Town & Country Club and thought the Prom Ballroom was terrific!  Additionally he was a member of the Saint Paul’s on the Hill Episcopalian Church’s Youth Group.

Following high school graduation, Gage continued his education at the University of Minnesota, joined the ROTC and earned a B.A. Degree and Doctor of Dental Surgery in six years before being sent to his first duty station.  His naval career began WWII at the U of M and included Duluth stations in Rhode Island, New Jersey, Brooklyn, NY, Great Lakes Naval Training Station, Il, Port Lyautey, French Morocco as well as Chincoteague, VA, Norfolk, VA, Annapolis, MD, the Bureau of Medicine in Washington, DC, Andrews Air Force Base and then on to retirement from Great Lakes in 1970, returning to home base in Saint Paul in 1970.  While in the navy he was not only a dental officer, but served as a Judge on Court Martial Boards as well and acted in the capacity of Protestant Clergy while on board ship.  During his naval career he served on three vessels, but his favorite was the USS Oriskany of which he was a plank owner.

Upon his retirement from the Navy, Gage opened a private dental practice in the Hamm Building in Saint Paul and was an active member of the American Academy of General Dentistry and the Minnesota Academy of General Dentistry and the Minnesota Academy of General Dentistry.  Throughout his dental career gage volunteered many hours providing free dental care.

He joined the Rotary club of Saint Paul on April 8, 1980 and was a member of our club at the time of this death.  He was a multiple Paul Harris Fellow.

Gage was a volunteer lighthouse inspector for the Great Lakes region, a lifetime journal keeper and loved good food and good beer.  Also know as Gage N. Colby… the “N” stood for no middle name.

Gage is survived by his widow, Virginia (Ginny), two sons, two daughters and several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

We request that this memorial resolution be read into the minutes of the Rotary Club of Saint Paul, and that a copy be sent to his family members.
