Unfortunately, we all probably know someone who is depressed and perhaps even suicidal. What we don’t necessarily know, however, is how to recognize warning signs of depression or suicide.

Rotarian Joe Beckman has been trained by S.A.V.E. (Suicide Awareness Voices of Education) as a presenter of its materials on depression.  He will, in his unique – and sometimes perhaps slightly irreverent – idiom, weave his personal story as a multiple “suicide survivor” into the S.A.V.E. materials. You should leave with a better ability to recognize the warning signs of both depression and suicide.

The talk will include helpful information on some of the common causes of depression, the myths and facts about suicide. The talk will also alert you to the warning signs of depression and of suicide.  (Oooh, there is a giveaway, too! Joe promises to have handy wallet cards with the signs of depression and suicide in teens and adults.)

Joe is a civil lawyer who started practice in 1988. He and his family live in St. Paul and are active volunteers in Scouting, Meals on Wheels, and the Ramsey County Guardian ad Litem Program, among others.

Joe’s undergraduate degree, however, is in Psychology. He resolved to study the human mind, in part, after a classmate with whom he at lunch nearly every day for four years in grammar and high school committed suicide at the beginning of their Junior year.

Shortly after relocating to his wife’s home state, Joe and his family began to support S.A.V.E. Joe has been trained by S.A.V.E. as a presenter of its materials on depression.
