Germany will always remember and appreciate the support from the United States during the Cold War and the reunification process after the Fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. But with new global dynamics since 2000, and new challenges facing the international community, what is the state of the relationship between the two nations a quarter century after German unification on October 3, 1990? German Consul General Herbert Quelle provides his insights arguing that there are both the prospect and the need for a continued strong transatlantic alliance with Germany being one of the main pillars in Europe.

Over the course of a diplomatic career spanning 35 years, Mr. Quelle has experienced firsthand the many changes to diplomacy in our lifetime, not least of which is the rapid increase in the speed of communication. Serving in the US (Los Angeles), South Africa, Cuba, Poland, the United Kingdom and as Ambassador to Azerbaijan, Mr. Quelle has proudly represented his country and its interests while retaining the critical capacity to engage with differing opinions. After one year at the German Consulate General in Boston in charge of academic affairs, he became Consul General in Chicago in July, 2014.
