“Take me out to the ballgame; take me out to the park……..”.  Well, there was no ballgame last Tuesday as 17 Rotarians were escorted around CHS Stadium by fellow Rotarian, Derek Sherrer.  But for those of us who had attended a game during the inaugural season, we could almost hear the crack of the bat on the ball, and smell the beer and brats on the grill.  Those who hadn’t been to a game during the recently completed season were wishing they had, and were vowing to themselves to make it a priority next June.

Derek gave us a walking tours of the entire facility, teaching us about architecture, broadcasting, marketing, what it’s like to be an independent league baseball player, and rainwater recycling, among other interesting tidbits.  We ended the tour with a well-prepared ballpark lunch in….the home team’s locker room---a great opportunity to view the pictures of former Saint’s ballplayers hanging around the perimeter, and to reminisce about the likes of Ida Borders and her 85 MPH fastball, or Daryl Strawberry and his career gone awry.  I think we all left with a sense of pride that this asset, a nice shiny new stadium, and an independent and bit quirky baseball organization, are now a central part of our downtown’s fabric!
